Moments of Joy(ce)
This blog post is in honor and memory of my friend Joyce. Joyce passed away last weekend, quite unexpectedly. It is believed she died of a heart attack. She was only in her 50’s and she had so much life left to live. It is with sincere sorrow that I mourn her passing.
Joyce’s death makes me think of my life and makes me want to be sure to live it with more joy and purpose. I first met Joyce just a few years ago, right after she happily took early retirement following a successful career in the telecommunications industry. What I am most thankful for is that she was doing her own thing and experiencing her life on her own terms in the last few years – she even fell in love with a new boyfriend not so long ago. Joyce, you will be missed, but you helped me to take a few minutes to reflect on what mattered in my life today.
I hope everyone reading this will join me in asking themselves, what were your moments of Joy today?
Did you talk to a friend you hadn’t spoken to in a long time?
Yes, amazingly, I did.
Did you learn a new dance step and practice ‘til you got it right?
Yes, with abandon, I did.
Did you snuggle with your kitties and feed them their favorite treats?
Yes, quite readily, I did.
Did you give and receive a compliment today?
Yes, appreciatively, I did.
Did you laugh out loud at something unexpected?
Yes, most happily, I did.
Did you check a few of the important things off your to do list?
Yes, very thankfully, I did.
Did you get up early and take a long walk?
Yes, almost willingly, I did.
Did you learn something new about the world you live in?
Yes, not surprisingly, I did.
And tomorrow I plan to pack my day with more of the small moments of joy that make me happy to be alive -- in loving memory of my friend Joyce.
